African filmmakers, journalists and emerging media talents are set to get a fresh platform to take their development stories beyond their communities as the Pan African Initiative on Media and Journalism (AfroMedia) opens participation for the “Athar” Short and Documentary Film Award.

The initiative, launched by the Misr El Kheir Foundation, is designed to shine a spotlight on visual stories that capture Africa’s development journey, community innovations and inspiring efforts to create lasting social, economic and environmental change.

Rather than focusing solely on established filmmakers, the Athar Award opens its doors to a broad range of African storytellers, including journalists, media professionals, young and amateur filmmakers, students, small production companies and organisations documenting development projects.

The organisers believe that some of Africa’s most powerful stories are found within communities where individuals and organisations are quietly developing solutions to everyday challenges.

Through the award, such stories can be transformed into compelling short films and documentaries capable of reaching audiences beyond their immediate surroundings.

The competition accepts documentaries, short fiction films and animated productions, provided they address issues connected to development or sustainability in the social, environmental or economic spheres.

To qualify, entries must have been produced within the last three years and must run for between two and 20 minutes.

Participants are also required to ensure that their footage is original or obtained with the necessary legal permissions.

For filmmakers working in languages other than Arabic, the organisers require Arabic or English subtitles to be provided.

The organisers have also removed one potential barrier for emerging filmmakers by making it clear that an entry does not have to have received its first screening at a film festival.

This means that films created independently and stories produced outside the traditional festival circuit can also seek recognition through the initiative, provided they meet the stated criteria.

At the heart of the Athar Award is the conviction that development is not only about statistics, projects and policies, but also about the human stories behind them.

From communities developing innovative environmental solutions to individuals transforming livelihoods and organisations implementing humanitarian interventions, the award seeks to give visual storytellers a chance to document such experiences.

AfroMedia said the initiative reflects the growing role of media and art in creating awareness, encouraging dialogue and showcasing models of change that can inspire communities across Africa.

The platform is expected to particularly appeal to young filmmakers and media students seeking opportunities to demonstrate their creative abilities while telling stories with social relevance.

The Misr El Kheir Foundation, which launched the award, was established in 2007 and has focused on sustainable development and capacity building for individuals and institutions.

With the Athar Award, African filmmakers and media professionals are being encouraged to look beyond conventional storytelling and document the people, communities and ideas shaping the continent’s future.

For many emerging storytellers, the initiative offers more than a filmmaking opportunity—it provides a chance to ensure that Africa’s own development stories are told through African eyes and preserved through the power of film.
