A 23-year-old housewife has been arrested in Katsina for allegedly attempting to kill her husband by slitting his throat while he slept, as police also recorded a major security breakthrough by foiling a bandit attack in Dandume Local Government Area.
The Katsina State Police Command said the two incidents, which occurred within hours of each other, highlighted its resolve to tackle both violent crime and insecurity across the state.
Police spokesman, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said Jamilu Ibrahim reported at the Central Market Police Division on Monday that his wife, Sadiya Lawal, allegedly attacked him with a knife at about 5:30 a.m. while he was asleep.
The victim sustained a deep cut to the neck and was rushed to hospital, where doctors are battling to save his life. Police said he is responding to treatment.
Detectives immediately visited the scene, arrested the suspect and recovered the knife believed to have been used in the attack. She remains in police custody and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.
While investigators were handling the domestic violence case, security operatives in Dandume recorded another success after repelling a large group of armed bandits attempting to infiltrate communities along the Kadisau-Sheme Road.
According to the police, a distress call alerted officers that dozens of gunmen riding motorcycles had been sighted in the area.
The Divisional Police Officer swiftly mobilised operatives of the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) alongside members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (KSCWC), who confronted the attackers in a fierce gun battle.
Unable to withstand the superior firepower of the combined security team, the bandits fled into the surrounding bush, abandoning two operational motorcycles and a machete, which were recovered by the police.
The command said a manhunt is underway to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
Commending the bravery of the officers and members of the Community Watch Corps, the Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Umar Fage, reaffirmed the command’s determination to sustain the offensive against banditry and other violent crimes.
The police commissioner also warned against domestic violence, urging couples to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving disagreements instead of resorting to violence.
He appealed to residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that public cooperation remains crucial to winning the fight against crime in Katsina State.
