TUC Calls for Wage Boost Amid Soaring Household Costs

In response to the escalating cost of living, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has put forward a proposal for an increased minimum wage to better align with the estimated monthly expenditure of an average household comprising a father, mother, and four children.

The proposed breakdown includes accommodation at N20,000/month, utilities encompassing electricity (N20,000/month), water (N5,000/month), and kerosene/gas (N20,000/month). The estimated monthly expenditure on food for a family of six is set at N216,000, medical expenses at N30,000, clothing at N20,000 (prorated yearly), education at N40,000, sanitation at N10,000, and transportation at N66,000 (calculated at N3,000 per day for 22 days).

The total proposed minimum monthly wage stands at N477,000 ($298), reflecting the TUC’s effort to address the economic challenges faced by Nigerian families.
