…..Security operatives have launched an investigation into the suspected poisoning of cattle belonging to a resident of Jol Community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 28, when troops of Sector 6, Operation ENDURING PEACE, responded to a distress report concerning the sudden death of livestock in the community.
The troops, deployed at Dakku, arrived at the location at about 3:30 p.m. following information that cattle owned by Alhaji Isah had allegedly consumed a substance suspected to be poisonous.
One of the animals was found dead at the scene, with initial accounts indicating that it had died after grazing in the area where the suspected substance was believed to have been present.
However, security sources said the exact cause of the animal’s death had not been established at the time of filing this report.
The troops have since commenced inquiries to identify the substance allegedly consumed by the cattle and determine whether the incident was accidental or deliberate.
The development has attracted attention given the fragile nature of farmer-herder relations in parts of Plateau State, where disputes involving livestock, farmland and cattle theft can quickly heighten tensions between communities.
Security authorities are expected to engage relevant community stakeholders as the investigation progresses, while residents have been urged to report suspicious activities to security agencies promptly.
Authorities are also seeking to prevent the incident from being exploited to fuel fresh tensions or trigger retaliatory actions in the affected community.
