Tinubu: Nigerians’ Hardship Predates Current Reforms

Katsina State Government

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the economic difficulties confronting many Nigerians did not begin with the reforms introduced by his administration over the past three years, arguing that the challenges are rooted in decades of low productivity.

Tinubu said many citizens continue to struggle with the rising cost of basic necessities, including food, school fees, medical bills and transportation.

According to the President, the current hardship should be viewed against the backdrop of long-standing economic weaknesses that have accumulated over several decades.

“Many Nigerians continue to struggle to afford food, school fees, medical bills and transportation. Their circumstances didn’t begin with the reforms of the last three years. Their struggles are the accumulated consequences of decades of low productivity,” Tinubu said.

The President’s remarks come amid continuing public concerns over the cost of living and the impact of economic reforms on households and businesses.

Tinubu has repeatedly defended his administration’s reform agenda, maintaining that measures being implemented are aimed at addressing structural weaknesses in the Nigerian economy and creating conditions for increased productivity and sustainable growth.

The President’s latest comments shift attention from the immediate effects of recent reforms to the longer-term economic challenges that have shaped the country’s living conditions.

He said addressing those challenges requires sustained efforts to raise productivity and strengthen the economy rather than relying solely on short-term interventions.
