Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared a fresh crackdown on self-acclaimed pastors and bishops accused of deceiving residents with fake miracles and dubious spiritual claims.
Speaking during a public address, the governor revealed that several suspected fake clerics had already been arrested as part of efforts to sanitize the religious space and protect citizens from exploitation.
“We have arrested fake pastors and bishops,” Soludo said. “Whoever wants to perform a miracle should come to Amaku Hospital.”
The governor’s remarks, which have since stirred widespread reactions across the country, were seen as a direct challenge to religious leaders who claim to possess supernatural healing powers.
Soludo insisted that the state government would no longer tolerate practices capable of misleading desperate citizens or turning religion into a business venture built on manipulation and fear.
According to him, genuine worship should not be used as a cover for fraudulent activities, stressing that authorities would continue to monitor and investigate suspicious religious operations across the state.
The Anambra governor further urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to individuals who exploit faith for personal gain.
His comments have sparked heated debate on social media, with supporters applauding the move as a bold step against fraud, while critics argue that the government should tread carefully on matters relating to religion and spirituality.
