Sokoto State has thrown its weight behind renewed efforts to make tax administration across the Northwest more transparent, accountable and responsive to the concerns of taxpayers.
The state joined other Northwest states at a stakeholders’ engagement organised by the Office of the Tax Ombud in Kaduna on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, where participants examined ways of improving trust between revenue authorities and taxpayers.
The forum, held under the theme, “Promoting Fairness in Tax Revenue Administration in Nigeria,” brought together representatives from Sokoto, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
Rather than focusing solely on revenue generation, discussions at the engagement centred on the need for tax systems that protect taxpayers’ rights, provide clearer information on obligations and create effective channels for resolving complaints.
Representing Sokoto State was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Revenue and Taxation, Dr. Isah Muazu, who also represented the Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service (SOIRS).
Participants shared experiences on revenue collection and taxpayer relations, while identifying areas where stronger cooperation among state revenue agencies could improve service delivery.
The discussions underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in tax administration, particularly in ensuring that taxpayers understand what is expected of them and know where to seek redress when concerns arise.
For Sokoto, its participation signals support for a regional approach to improving tax administration through collaboration, experience-sharing and stronger engagement with taxpayers.
The Sokoto State Internal Revenue Service said it remains committed to promoting fairness, transparency and accountability while improving the quality of services available to taxpayers.
The Kaduna engagement is expected to deepen cooperation among revenue authorities in the seven Northwest states and contribute to efforts to build a more efficient and taxpayer-responsive tax administration system.
