The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has firmly kicked against a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment that awarded ₦100 million in damages to officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) in a defamation suit.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday in suit No. FCT/HC/CV/4547/24, Justice Yusuf Halilu ruled in favour of the DSS officials, ordering SERAP to pay ₦100 million in damages, issue a public apology, and also cover ₦1 million in litigation costs. The court further imposed a 10 percent annual post-judgment interest on the damages until full payment is made.
But SERAP has rejected the decision, describing it as unacceptable and signaling its intention to challenge the ruling. The organisation maintains its stance that its actions fall within lawful advocacy for accountability and human rights, setting the stage for a fresh legal and public battle over the verdict.
