The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Abubakar Musa over an alleged attempt to desecrate the Holy Qur’an and use fetish materials to influence a woman in Zuru Local Government Area of the state.
Musa, a resident of Rafin Mose Village, Zuru, was arrested in connection with allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, use of spells and hypnosis, and conduct capable of causing public disturbance.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.
According to the police, the incident occurred on August 9, 2026, in the Zango area of Zuru, where Musa allegedly acted in concert with two other suspects, identified as Rabi’u Tela, husband of Zarau Hassan, and Hamza Zango.
The two alleged accomplices are currently at large.
Police said preliminary investigation indicated that Musa allegedly dug a pit inside Zarau Hassan’s room and buried a copy of the Holy Qur’an alongside materials including semen, white and red kola nuts, underwear, dead animals and other suspected fetish objects.
Investigators alleged that the bizarre act was intended to make Hassan more submissive to her husband, Rabi’u Tela.
The Command said the alleged conduct was particularly concerning because of its potential to inflame religious sentiments and trigger a breach of peace among members of the Muslim community.
The arrest has sparked renewed attention to the need for vigilance against acts capable of undermining religious harmony, especially where sacred religious materials are allegedly exploited for criminal or traditional ritual purposes.
Police authorities said efforts were ongoing to track down Tela and Zango, who remain at large.
Musa, who is currently in police custody, is expected to be charged before a court after the conclusion of investigations.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, condemned the alleged act and warned individuals against engaging in activities capable of threatening religious harmony and public order.
The Commissioner assured residents that the Command would take decisive action, within the provisions of the law, against anyone whose conduct threatens peaceful coexistence in the state.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands, assuring residents that investigations would be conducted in accordance with due process.
