The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspected arms suppliers linked to a criminal network allegedly fueling violent crimes in Ikot Ekpene and surrounding communities.
The suspects, identified as Udeme Udo, 52, and Nkereuwem Udo, 40, both natives of Ikot Abia Idem Village in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation carried out by operatives of the command in the early hours of Thursday.
According to the police, the operation was conducted at about 4:25 a.m. on May 8, 2026, following credible intelligence on the activities of the suspects.
A locally made revolver pistol was reportedly recovered during a search on the suspects after their arrest.
The Command disclosed that preliminary investigations revealed that the two men are members of a criminal syndicate allegedly involved in the supply of illegal arms and ammunition to criminal elements operating within Ikot Ekpene and nearby areas.
Confirming the development in a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Timfon John, said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the command to curb illegal arms proliferation and dismantle criminal networks across the state.
The statement noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to sustaining aggressive operations against criminal groups and individuals involved in unlawful possession and trafficking of firearms.
“The Command remains resolute in dismantling criminal syndicates and cutting off the supply channels of illegal arms fueling violent crimes across Akwa Ibom State,” the statement said.
The police boss warned individuals engaged in the illegal arms trade to immediately abandon such activities or face strict legal consequences.
He also directed continued intelligence-driven operations, surveillance, and raids on identified criminal hideouts and flashpoints across the state.
Meanwhile, the command said discreet investigations have commenced to uncover other members of the syndicate and ensure the prosecution of all persons connected to the illegal arms network.
The police further appealed to residents to remain security conscious and report suspicious activities or movements to the nearest police station as part of efforts to strengthen community policing and crime prevention.
