The Katsina State Police Command has arrested a 50-year-old suspect over an alleged attempt to carry out witchcraft and ritual-related activities at the General Hospital, Funtua.
The suspect, identified as Sagir Muntari, was apprehended following a swift police response to a distress report from the hospital’s security unit.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the incident occurred on May 9, 2026, at about 4:20 p.m. when a hospital staff member reportedly noticed an unidentified man moving suspiciously around the hospital premises.
The staff member immediately alerted the hospital’s Chief Security Officer, who in turn reported the matter to the police.
Acting on the information, detectives were deployed to the scene where the suspect was arrested before any harm could be done.
Police said preliminary interrogation revealed a shocking confession by the suspect, who allegedly admitted entering the hospital with the intention of obtaining the womb of a newborn baby for use in ritual and spiritual charm activities.
The command disclosed that investigations were ongoing and assured that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Umar Fage, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives, public institutions and healthcare facilities across the state.
The police also warned individuals involved in ritual practices and other criminal activities to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station or through the command’s emergency communication channels.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of Funtua and hospital users, with many calling for tighter security around healthcare facilities, especially maternity wards and child care units.
