Police Foil Petrol Station Robbery in Abak, Neutralise One Suspect, Recover Firearms

Borno State Government

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has recorded a major operational breakthrough after foiling a planned armed robbery attack in Abak Local Government Area, neutralising one suspect and recovering firearms and ammunition during a swift, intelligence-led operation.

Acting on credible intelligence received on January 2, 2026, police operatives were alerted to the movement of a notorious armed robbery gang that had been terrorising Point-of-Sale operators, petrol stations and supermarkets across Abak and neighbouring communities. The gang was reportedly planning to strike a petrol station along Ikot Ekpene Road by Ikot Ekang Junction.

Without delay, officers were deployed to the area and strategically positioned to intercept the criminals.

At about 7:47pm, the gang—said to be about six heavily armed men—arrived at the location and attempted to rob pump attendants. Their plan was thwarted when they encountered the police team, leading to a gun battle.

During the exchange, one of the suspects was fatally wounded, while others fled into nearby bushes, escaping on motorcycles. Police sources revealed that intelligence indicates some of the fleeing suspects may have sustained serious gunshot injuries.

A thorough search of the scene led to the recovery of four locally made guns, six live cartridges, two mobile phones, a brown bag, a wallet and four ATM cards. The neutralised suspect, yet to be identified, was found with charms tied to his body. His remains were evacuated and deposited at a mortuary.

Commending the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, praised their bravery, professionalism and swift response, noting that the operation successfully prevented the robbery without any loss of innocent lives or damage to property.

The police boss assured residents that an intensive manhunt is ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing members of the gang, stressing that the Command remains resolute in its mandate to protect lives and property across the state.

The Command also urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information. Medical practitioners were specifically advised to report any individuals seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds, assuring that all information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.

With this latest success, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command has once again signalled that criminals have no hiding place in the state.
