The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old suspect and recovered a stolen minibus in what authorities described as a successful intelligence-led operation that thwarted an alleged plan to dispose of the vehicle.
The suspect, identified as Aniette Etim of Ifa Atai Village in Uyo Local Government Area, was apprehended by police operatives on July 5 following actionable intelligence.
Police said a blue Daihatsu Hijet Mini Bus with registration number KMK 625 ZT was recovered during the operation.
According to preliminary investigations, Etim, a commercial driver based in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, allegedly obtained the vehicle through a hire-purchase arrangement but breached the agreement by absconding with it without the owner’s consent.
Investigators further alleged that the suspect relocated the vehicle to Uyo with the intention of selling it before police operatives intercepted him.
The Command said the owner of the vehicle, identified simply as Mr. Pele of Yenagoa, has been contacted, while the recovered minibus has been secured as an exhibit pending the conclusion of investigations and its return through due process.
Commending the operatives, the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, praised their professionalism and vigilance, saying the operation reflects the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing.
He reaffirmed the police resolve to deny criminals safe haven in the state and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
The Commissioner assured members of the public that all information received would be treated confidentially, stressing that the Command remains committed to protecting lives and property while ensuring offenders are brought to justice.
