Security analyst Dr. Bashir Kurfi has been detained by the Katsina State Police Command after honoring an invitation for questioning over allegations he made during a television interview linking the Katsina State Government to the sponsorship of some former bandits for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage.
Kurfi disclosed that he reported to the Katsina State Police Headquarters on Tuesday, where he was questioned on issues relating to his civil society activities before officers informed him of a petition arising from his interview on Trust TV.
According to him, he declined to make further statements until his legal representatives arrived.
The security analyst said he was subsequently taken to court for arraignment, but the matter could not proceed because court proceedings had ended for the day. He was later returned to police custody and is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday.
The development follows a strong rebuttal by the Katsina State Government, which had described Kurfi’s claims as false and baseless. The government warned that it would seek legal redress unless the allegations were substantiated with credible evidence or withdrawn.
Kurfi’s detention has attracted public attention ahead of his expected court appearance, with the case likely to test the legal boundaries surrounding public allegations against government officials and institutions.
