Pantami Critiques Tax Reform Bills, Calls for Wider Consultations

Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has voiced critical observations on the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024, and urged the National Assembly to suspend legislative action pending broader consultations.

Pantami, who recently returned from speaking at the World Halal Summit 2024 in Türkiye, described the bill as having transformative potential but flagged ambiguities and possible constitutional conflicts. Key sections, including 3(3), 7(6), 8(2), and 141, were singled out for their lack of clarity, which he warns could hinder implementation and open doors for regulatory exploitation.

“In leadership, the ability to change one’s mind shows intelligence and empathy, not weakness,” he remarked, advising lawmakers to invite input from tax experts, constitutional lawyers, and other stakeholders.

The former Minister of Communications also emphasized the urgent need to rebuild trust between the government and its citizens, stating, “Our nation is deteriorating due to mistrust. Prioritizing national interest over personal gain is essential.”

Pantami pledged to share further insights on the remaining three tax reform bills, while urging policymakers to address citizens’ concerns diligently and honestly.
