Motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators and motorcyclists violating traffic regulations in Akwa Ibom State have been put on notice as the State Police Command has declared that there will be no hiding place for traffic offenders under a renewed statewide enforcement campaign.
The Command said the intensified operation is aimed at restoring sanity on the roads, protecting lives and drastically reducing road crashes linked to reckless and avoidable traffic violations.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, the Command expressed concern that despite sustained public awareness campaigns, many road users continue to flout traffic laws with little regard for public safety.
According to the police, the persistent disregard for traffic regulations has continued to claim lives, destroy property and obstruct the free movement of vehicles across the state.
The Command identified some of the most common offences to include one-way driving, excessive speeding, dangerous and reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or illicit substances, the use of concealed or defaced number plates, illegal parking, route violations by tricycle and motorcycle operators, overloading, disobedience to traffic signs, and the use of mobile phones while driving.
The police announced that the enforcement exercise is already in full operation across the state and will continue indefinitely, warning that officers have been directed to ensure strict compliance with traffic laws while maintaining professionalism and fairness in carrying out their duties.
The Command warned that anyone caught violating traffic regulations would face the full weight of the law. It added that vehicles, tricycles and motorcycles used in committing traffic offences could be impounded, while offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with existing laws.
Residents were advised to ensure their vehicles are properly registered, roadworthy and fully documented. Drivers were also urged to obey speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, respect road signs and markings, refrain from driving against traffic and comply with lawful directives from traffic enforcement personnel.
Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare stressed that the exercise is not intended to victimise law-abiding citizens but to safeguard lives, prevent avoidable road accidents and instill a culture of responsible road use across Akwa Ibom State.
The Command also appealed to members of the public to support the initiative by obeying traffic rules and promptly reporting reckless or dangerous drivers to the nearest police station or other relevant security agencies.
Reaffirming its commitment to public safety, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command vowed to sustain the operation without fear or favour, insisting that road safety remains a collective responsibility requiring the cooperation of every road user.
