The Nigerian Army has officially declared open the 2026 Inter-Brigade Competition for Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers of the 8 Division at the Natsinta Cantonment Parade Ground, Katsina State.
The annual event brings together personnel from various formations to compete in a series of military and fitness-based activities designed to enhance discipline, teamwork, and operational readiness.
Events featured in the competition include Drill, Map Reading and Drone Proficiency, Physical Fitness and Obstacle Crossing, Weapon Handling and Shooting, Combat Relay, and a 2.4-kilometre race.
Declaring the competition open, the Special Guest of Honour and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division/Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force (North West), Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the exercise is aimed at fostering discipline, interrelationship, and sportsmanship among troops.
The GOC, who was represented by the Chief of Staff, 17 Brigade Nigerian Army, Katsina, Colonel Nehemiah Aboi Yakubu, noted that the competition remains a key annual event for strengthening cohesion within the Division and improving combat efficiency.
He explained that participating formations include 1 Brigade, Zamfara; 17 Brigade, Katsina; 8 Division Garrison, Sokoto; and the 48 Engineer Brigade alongside its affiliated units.
In his remarks, the Commander of 17 Brigade, Brigadier General Ishaya Ibrahim—represented by the Commanding Officer, 35 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Okorie Obasi—described the competition as a vital platform for enhancing esprit de corps and physical fitness among personnel.
He also referenced the recent killing of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, noting that the Armed Forces remain committed to ensuring that justice is served and that troops remain focused and resolute in the discharge of their duties.
He commended the GOC for entrusting the 17 Brigade with the responsibility of hosting the competition and encouraged participants to give their best in all events.
According to him, the competition is one of several initiatives aimed at strengthening healthy rivalry, improving operational efficiency, and promoting unity among formations under the Division.
He urged participants to compete with professionalism, discipline, and determination, stressing that the exercise reflects the Army’s commitment to training, preparedness, and excellence.
The 2026 edition of the competition is expected to further deepen camaraderie among troops while sharpening their tactical and physical capabilities for ongoing security operations across the North West and beyond.
