National Assembly Rerun Election Tribunal hears Katsina PDP petition April 23

The National Assembly Rerun Election Tribunal has fixed April 23, for hearing of the petition filed by Jamilu Mohammed of the PDP challenging the victory of APC during the rerun election into the Kankara/Faskari/Sabuwa Federal Constituency.

The APC candidate, Dalhatu Shehu was declared winner after the election, which was conducted on Feb. 3.

The rerun election was conducted in 20 poling units of the constituency.

16 polling units were in Garagi registration area of Kankara local government, while the remaining four were in Daudawa, Faskari.

During the proceedings, the counsel to the petitioners, Johnson Usman, SAN, prayed the tribunal to cancel the rerun election in some poling units due to irregularities during the election.

He further urged the tribunal to add the valid votes in the election to the outstanding results from the 2023 general elections, and declare their client winner.

In his submission, the respondents counsel, Nureini Jimoh, SAN, objected the submission of the petitioner’s counsel, saying that the petition is incompetent.

Jimoh claimed that, what should be included in the petition was not included, also ommited so may things from it.

After their submissions, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice K. A Ojiako, ruled that hearing of the petition will commence on April 23.

Ojiako said that the hearing would also go on day-to-day, and that all parties should be ready to present their witnesses, and the cross examination.

He added that all INEC documents to be tendered through the bar.
