In a daring show of force, troops of Operation Hadin Kai and the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have repelled a fierce ISWAP attack on Damboa town, Borno State, killing at least 16 terrorists during a dramatic overnight firefight.
The insurgents, who launched a coordinated assault around 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, targeted both the Azir Bridge axis and the 25 Task Force Brigade base. But their offensive met stiff resistance as ground troops, backed by airstrikes and artillery support, fought back relentlessly for over two hours.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the terrorists stormed the brigade location in large numbers but were met with overwhelming firepower that forced a retreat, leaving behind the lifeless bodies of 16 fighters. Several others escaped with injuries.
“Two of our gallant soldiers paid the supreme price during the intense battle,” a military source revealed.
In the heat of the clash, a projectile from the terrorists triggered a fire at an ammunition depot, affecting two structures before it was swiftly brought under control.
Pursuit and clearance operations are ongoing to mop up the remnants of the fleeing fighters.
Damboa remains a strategic hotspot in southern Borno, often targeted by ISWAP due to its location. However, the Nigerian military’s firm grip, bolstered by recent gains in the region, continues to frustrate insurgent ambitions.
Operation Hadin Kai has in recent weeks ramped up its offensive, delivering crushing blows to terrorist strongholds across Borno and Yobe States.
