One Dead, Another Shot as Soldiers Launch Manhunt for Fleeing Assailants
Residents of Ariri community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State were thrown into panic late Friday night as suspected militias launched a deadly attack, only to be repelled by troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP).
The attackers reportedly stormed the community at about 11:30 p.m. on August 14, triggering a swift military response after troops received a distress call about the invasion.
Security sources said soldiers of Sector 3 immediately moved into the area and engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat into the surrounding terrain.
But the midnight assault left a trail of casualties.
During a search operation after the attackers fled, troops discovered the lifeless body of Maianguwa Ishe, who had reportedly been killed during the attack.
Another resident, Joseph Ezekiel, was found with gunshot wounds. He was quickly evacuated to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
The successful intervention prevented the attackers from inflicting further casualties, as troops maintained their positions and began combing the area for the fleeing assailants.
Military sources said troops have since launched an aggressive manhunt, backed by fighting patrols across Ariri and neighbouring locations.
The operation is aimed at tracking down the attackers, disrupting any attempt to regroup and restoring confidence among residents who have been rattled by the latest violence.
The incident has once again underscored the security challenges confronting communities in parts of Plateau State, where isolated attacks have continued to raise concerns over the safety of rural residents.
For now, troops remain on the trail of the assailants, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance across the general area to prevent a possible reprisal or fresh attack.
