A Kaduna-based Business man and chairman Qausain Group Alhaji Nasiru Musa Idris, popularly known as Albani Agege has accused prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi of interfering in his marriage to his Moroccan wife and keeping her away from him for about 11 months.
Nasiru Albani Agege made the allegation in an interview with RFI Hausa, claiming that he took his wife to Sheikh Gumi for counselling after the cleric requested to speak with her.
According to Idris, he trusted Sheikh Gumi as a religious scholar and therefore had no reason to suspect that taking his wife to the cleric for counselling could lead to a dispute.
He alleged that after the meeting, his wife stopped responding to his calls, prompting him to seek assistance from security agencies to establish her whereabouts.
Idris further alleged that efforts by security authorities to investigate the matter were frustrated.
He said his Moroccan wife had never known Sheikh Gumi before he introduced her to the cleric, adding that he was the only person who had previously known Gumi.
Idris also claimed that the dispute started after Sheikh Gumi allegedly asked him to obtain another marriage certificate from a Sharia Court, despite having marriage documents issued in Morocco and Nigeria.
He said he presented documents relating to the marriage, including papers from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in Morocco, as well as other supporting documents and a police character report.
Idris alleged that Sheikh Gumi later became involved in efforts to separate him from his wife and called on the cleric to honour a police invitation so that the matter could be investigated.
He maintained that if the allegations against Gumi were untrue, the cleric should present himself to the authorities and clear his name.
However, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied the allegations.
Speaking to Daily Trust, Gumi said the Moroccan woman had already left Nigeria and was currently in Morocco with her parents.
The cleric declined to provide further details, saying the matter was already before a court.
He, however, threatened to sue Idris for defamation.
Gumi’s personal assistant on special assignment, Malam Nasiru Ayuba, also denied that the cleric had kept Idris’ wife in his house.
Ayuba said the Moroccan woman had approached Sheikh Gumi herself to seek assistance over a personal matter, and that the cleric subsequently intervened in the dispute.
He also accused Idris of attempting to damage Sheikh Gumi’s reputation through social media.
The dispute remains contested, with Idris calling for an official investigation and Sheikh Gumi denying the allegations and indicating that he intends to pursue legal action over what he described as defamation.
