Labour Union Deliberately Plunges Nigeria into Nationwide Blackout

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that the Labour Union has deliberately shut down the national grid, causing a nationwide blackout.

The shutdown occurred at 2:19 AM on June 3, 2024, after union members forcibly took over control rooms, driving away operators and injuring those who resisted.

Key transmission substations in Benin, Ganmo, Ayede, Olorunsogo, Akangba, and Osogbo were targeted, leading to power cuts and forced shutdowns of generating units across multiple stations.

Despite TCN’s attempts to recover the grid using the Shiroro Substation at 3:23 AM, ongoing union activities continue to hinder efforts.

TCN’s GM of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, assured the public that efforts to restore and stabilize the grid are ongoing.
