For 25 families in Katsina State, the loss of their loved ones in police service has left a lasting void. But on Tuesday, the Nigeria Police Force offered a measure of support as the families received financial assistance totalling ₦28.01 million.
The cheques, amounting to ₦28,012,584.70, were presented by the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, CP Ali Umar Fage, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu.
The presentation took place at the Conference Hall of the Katsina State Police Command Headquarters as part of the IGP’s welfare package for families of officers who died while serving the country.
Rather than allowing the sacrifices of the deceased officers to fade with time, the intervention was presented as a reminder that their service and the families they left behind remain recognised by the Force.
Speaking during the ceremony, CP Fage extended his condolences to the beneficiaries and prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased officers.
He described the fallen policemen as gallant personnel who served the nation with dedication before paying the ultimate price in the line of duty.
The Commissioner urged the beneficiaries to deploy the financial assistance judiciously, particularly towards meeting immediate family needs and creating a more secure future.
He also commended IGP Disu for his continued attention to the welfare of police personnel and families of officers who lost their lives in active service.
CP Fage said such support was important in demonstrating institutional appreciation for the sacrifices made by police officers in the course of protecting lives and property.
For the beneficiaries, the gesture offered not only financial assistance but also a sense of recognition for the sacrifices made by their departed relatives.
Speaking on behalf of the families, Alkasim Salisu expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and the Katsina Commissioner of Police for the intervention.
He assured the authorities that the funds would be used responsibly, while praying for continued guidance and protection for officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Katsina Command reaffirmed that the welfare of its personnel remains an important part of its responsibilities, extending beyond serving officers to include families of those who died in the course of duty.
The development underscores an enduring message within the Force: while officers may be lost in service, their sacrifices—and the families they leave behind—remain part of the institution’s responsibility.
The cheques may provide financial relief, but for the 25 families, the gesture also serves as a reminder that the nation has not forgotten those who gave their lives in its service.
