The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the captivity of bandits, describing the development as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, who said the former senior military officer died from health complications while being held by his abductors.
According to the government, Major General Rabe succumbed to complications arising from diabetes and hypertension despite ongoing efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his freedom.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension while in captivity,” the statement noted.
The government lamented that all attempts to ensure his safe return ended in tragedy, describing his abduction and eventual death as a painful reminder of the security challenges confronting parts of the country.
It said the late military officer’s passing represents a profound loss not only to his family and Katsina State but also to Nigeria, given his years of dedicated service to the nation.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
The governor described the death as a dark moment for the state, stressing that it underscores the urgent need to intensify the fight against banditry and other forms of criminality.
He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to working closely with the Federal Government, security agencies, and relevant stakeholders to bring those responsible for the abduction to justice.
Governor Radda also assured residents that the state government remains resolute in its determination to restore lasting peace and security across Katsina and protect lives and property from criminal elements.
The government called on citizens to continue supporting security agencies with timely information and cooperation, noting that collective efforts remain crucial to overcoming insecurity.
Prayers were also offered for the repose of the soul of the late retired Major General, whose death has sparked fresh concerns over the activities of bandits in parts of the North-West.
The passing of Major General Rabe has drawn widespread sympathy, with many describing him as a distinguished officer whose service and sacrifice to the nation will be remembered for years to come.
