The Katsina State Commissioner for Environment, Prof. Mohammed Al-Amin, has attributed the environmental milestones recorded in the state to the deliberate investments and reforms of the administration of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda.
Speaking in commemoration of World Cleanup Day 2026, themed “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities,” the Commissioner noted that Governor Radda has placed environmental sustainability at the centre of his development agenda.
Prof. Al-Amin explained that the administration has made major strides in the sector, beginning with an N800 million budgetary provision in 2026 for waste management equipment and sanitation infrastructure to strengthen waste collection and urban cleanliness.
In addition, he said the state has moved beyond mere waste disposal to a circular economy model, through partnership with Circular Economy companies to deploy an integrated waste management system comprising material recovery facilities and a modern sanitary landfill.
Furthermore, the Commissioner disclosed that the government has launched a Waste-to-Wealth Programme, under which 200 youths have been trained in recycling and green entrepreneurship, a programme that attracted over 16,000 applications.
He added that this is complemented by Katsina’s attainment of Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in 2026 and sustained investments in tree planting, climate adaptation, urban greening, drainage and flood management.
Prof. Al-Amin reiterated Governor Radda’s commitment to converting waste to economic value and protecting the state’s fragile Sahelian ecosystem, while urging residents, traditional rulers, market associations and schools to support the environmental drive by reducing food waste, embracing recycling and desisting from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages.
