A suspected fighter of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to troops of the Nigerian Army in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State as sustained military offensives continue to weaken insurgent strongholds in the North-East.
Sources disclosed that the suspect turned himself in to troops of the 192 Battalion at about 12:35 p.m. on May 7 while soldiers were on picketing duty along the Gwoza–Limankara road.
The surrendered insurgent reportedly told troops that he escaped from the notorious Drume terrorist camp situated within the Mandara Mountains axis, an area long associated with insurgent activities.
Security sources said the only item recovered from him at the point of surrender was the sum of ₦3,500.
The suspect has since been taken into military custody for profiling, debriefing, and further investigation.
The latest surrender comes amid growing reports of insurgents abandoning terrorist camps following sustained aerial bombardments, ground assaults, and intensified clearance operations by troops across Borno State.
Military sources say troops have continued aggressive patrols and interdiction missions aimed at dismantling remaining terrorist enclaves while encouraging more fighters to surrender.
