PLATEAU — Tragedy struck along the Matelem-Ndung road in Tangur District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State after gunmen suspected to be motorcycle thieves reportedly killed a rider late Tuesday night.
The victim, identified as Mr Danladi Idi Dakum, was attacked while riding his motorcycle along the road at about 11:20 p.m. on August 25, 2026.
According to security sources, troops of Sector 5 deployed at Matelem were alerted to an attack along the route and immediately moved to the scene.
On arrival, the soldiers reportedly discovered the lifeless body of Dakum at the location, suggesting that the attackers had struck before security personnel could reach the area.
Preliminary information indicated that the victim may have been targeted by suspected motorcycle snatchers operating along the route during the late-night hours.
The deceased’s remains were subsequently evacuated and deposited at a mortuary for preservation and further necessary procedures.
The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of travellers using the Matelem-Ndung road, particularly at night, amid persistent security challenges in parts of Plateau State.
Security operatives have commenced efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing, identify those behind the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Authorities are also expected to intensify surveillance and patrols along the route to prevent further attacks and protect residents and road users.
Dakum’s killing has left residents and members of the local community mourning, as security agencies continue the search for those responsible.
