Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed profound gratitude to the Swiss Government for a donation of €1.2 million to aid victims of the recent flood disaster in Borno State. The donation, part of the Swiss Federation’s ongoing humanitarian support, was announced during a sympathy visit by the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Nicolas Lang, at the Government House in Maiduguri on Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
The delegation, led by Ambassador Lang, included Mr. Nicolas Martin-Achard, Senior Humanitarian Advisor, and Mr. Florent Geel, Senior Political Advisor at the Swiss Embassy. The visit followed the devastating flood that affected communities across Borno on September 10, 2024.
Governor Zulum, in his response, commended the Swiss Government for their continued solidarity and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the funds are judiciously utilized to support the affected citizens. “On behalf of the Government and the people of Borno, I extend our heartfelt thanks to the Swiss Government for this generous donation. We are also grateful to Ambassador Lang and his team for their visit and ongoing support. Rest assured, these funds will be carefully managed for the benefit of the flood victims,” Zulum said.
Ambassador Lang highlighted Switzerland’s enduring commitment to Borno State, noting that the Swiss Government had previously contributed $700,000 to the Borno Model in 2023, a program designed to facilitate the exit of Boko Haram insurgents and civilians affected by the conflict. “These contributions in 2023 and 2024 demonstrate Switzerland’s unwavering support for Borno and its people,” Ambassador Lang stated.
