Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to strengthening women’s participation and inclusion in politics and governance across the state.
The meeting, held today at Muhammadu Buhari House, Government House, Katsina, brought together women stakeholders, political party leaders, and government officials under the platform of the Reserved Seats for Women Association.
The engagement focused on expanding women’s role in leadership, political participation, and decision-making processes within the state.
It also formed part of ongoing efforts by the administration to promote inclusive governance and increase opportunities for women within the framework of existing party electoral laws structures.
Governor Radda described women’s inclusion in politics as a key pillar of democratic growth and effective governance, stressing that his administration remains committed to ensuring equal opportunity for all.
He noted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has provided a fair platform for women to participate and contest elective positions without discrimination.
“Our great party has provided the mandate and opportunity for women to freely contest for positions. This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to inclusivity and equal participation in the political process,” the Governor said.
He explained that candidate selection processes are guided strictly by the Electoral Act, which recognises only two valid methods—primary elections and consensus.
“As stipulated by the Electoral Act, there are only two recognised pathways for candidate emergence—either through primary elections or by consensus,” he added.
Governor Radda acknowledged challenges affecting women’s political participation, describing them as issues that require continuous engagement and collective effort.
He also expressed concern that in some cases, positions intended to promote women’s representation are not always occupied by women themselves.
“It is unfortunate that, even in some cases, positions meant to advance women’s interests are not occupied by them,” he said.
Governor highlighted the electoral significance, stating that women constitute a large percentage of voters across polling units in the state.
He further commended women’s qualities in leadership, including discipline, commitment, and balanced decision-making.
“From my experience in governance, women are committed, trustworthy, and bring balance that is essential for effective leadership,” he added.
Governor Radda stressed that leadership ultimately reflects the will of the people, assuring that his administration will continue broad consultations in line with public interest.
“I do not have the authority to compel anyone to support a particular candidate. What I can do is engage in consultations to understand the will of the people,” he said.
He urged women to remain focused, build their capacities, and actively participate in political processes.
The Governor called for patience and unity among stakeholders as political processes continue, expressing optimism for a more inclusive outcome.
“Together, we can ensure a fair, inclusive, and successful political process for the benefit of our state,” he said.
Earlier, the APC State Chairman, Hon. Dr. Bashir Gambo Saulawa, commended the role of women in the party and reaffirmed continued support for their participation in politics.
“We are honoured to be in the company of our women, who are the backbone of our society. The party will continue to promote and strengthen women’s participation,” he said.
He urged stakeholders to allow due process in candidate selection to take its full course.
“We must allow due process to be completed. The Governor remains the leader of the party, and we will continue to work under his guidance,” he added.
The Chairperson of the North West Reserved Seats for Women Association and First Lady of Katsina State, Hajiya Zulaihat Dikko Radda, highlighted the origin of the initiative, noting that it emerged from consultations under the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum.
“This initiative was properly channelled and advanced for implementation after wide consultations and engagements,” she said.
She commended women for their commitment and encouraged them to remain aligned with community values and development goals.
“Women have a crucial role to play in development, and this step is aimed at strengthening their participation in governance,” she added.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Aisha Aminu Malumfashi, described the initiative as historic in the state’s political development.
“Since its creation, no administration has given women this level of recognition and opportunity,” she said.
She added that efforts are ongoing to achieve at least 30 percent representation of women in political appointments and party structures.
“Women constitute a larger percentage of registered voters, and their inclusion is vital to the democratic process,” she noted.
The Chairman of the Hisbah Board, Abu Ammar, emphasised the importance of women’s leadership within Islamic principles.
“Islam recognises and permits women to take on leadership roles, provided such responsibilities align with moral and community values,” he said.
He outlined leadership qualities expected of women, including integrity, good character, and community acceptance.
The APC Women Leader, Hajiya Aisha Matazu, expressed strong support for female aspirants and reaffirmed women’s readiness to mobilise for greater participation.
“We are united and fully prepared to support women in their aspirations and roles within the political process,” she said.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, Hon. Faruk Lawal; Speaker, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura; Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Hon. Abdullahi Aliyu Turaji; party officials; government functionaries; women groups; and other key stakeholders.
