Since assuming office, Zulum has led the charge in rebuilding a state that was once synonymous with conflict, particularly from the insurgency perpetrated by Boko Haram.

His administration has not only fortified the region against terrorist threats but has also transformed its educational and infrastructural landscape, ensuring a brighter future for the people of Borno.

Zulum’s strategic and unwavering stance in the counter-insurgency campaign has brought much-needed peace and stability to the region. For over a decade, Borno State was the epicenter of Boko Haram’s violent activities, leading to the displacement of millions and destruction of communities.

However, under Governor Zulum’s leadership, the state’s security architecture has been strengthened through collaboration with the military, local vigilantes, and international partners. His hands-on approach, including visiting conflict zones and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, has earned him admiration and respect for putting his people first.

Despite these commendable achievements, Governor Zulum has faced significant challenges in his quest to secure peace and develop Borno. Natural disasters, exacerbated by climate change, have caused flooding and other environmental disruptions, impacting the state’s agricultural output and infrastructure development. The global economic downturn, coupled with the naira’s devaluation, has further strained the state’s economy, increasing the cost of building materials and making it difficult to execute key projects.

One of Zulum’s most outstanding achievements in his fight against insurgency is his belief in education as a weapon to combat terrorism. Recognizing that ignorance and extremist ideologies fuel fundamentalism, Zulum has built over 100 mega schools across Borno State.

These schools provide a high-quality, secular education for the children of the region, many of whom were once targets of Boko Haram’s indoctrination.

However, the cost of maintaining these schools, especially in a region recovering from conflict, remains a significant financial burden on the state.

In addition to modern schools, Governor Zulum has also prioritized the establishment of Islamic colleges to impart genuine Islamic knowledge. By doing so, he ensures that the religious education provided in these institutions is authentic and devoid of the extremist misinterpretations that often fuel terrorism. Yet, the governor’s policies have occasionally faced resistance, with some communities failing to fully understand his approach to peacebuilding through education.

These misunderstandings, amplified by social media critiques and their sponsors, have sometimes hindered the smooth implementation of his initiatives.

Zulum’s educational reforms, particularly in Islamic colleges, are a proactive effort to fight the ideological battle against terror. By empowering young minds with the correct interpretation of Islam, he is not only preserving the spiritual heritage of the state but also preventing the spread of extremist ideologies. However, his efforts have been met with baseless propaganda from unknown sources, spreading falsehoods and undermining his work without clear objectives or direction. This organized disinformation campaign poses a challenge to his administration’s efforts.

Furthermore, the governor’s commitment to infrastructural development goes beyond the classroom. Zulum’s administration has rebuilt homes, markets, and roads destroyed by insurgent attacks, restoring normalcy to communities that had been ravaged by years of conflict. Nevertheless, the high cost of building materials, driven by inflation and economic challenges, has slowed down some of these critical projects, making it difficult for the government to meet the people’s expectations fully.

Zulum’s success in fostering peace in Borno cannot be overstated. His leadership has seen the return of displaced persons to their communities, as well as the resumption of farming, trade, and other economic activities that had been disrupted by the insurgency. However, insufficient funding, largely due to the state’s limited financial resources, remains a persistent issue, preventing the full execution of many key development projects.

Beyond his work in education and security, Governor Zulum has shown a deep sense of compassion and humility. His personal interactions with victims of insurgency, his transparent governance, and his relentless dedication to the people have made him a beloved figure in Borno. His administration has been marked by swift responses to crises, even though external factors such as global economic pressures and local political opposition have presented additional obstacles.

Governor Zulum’s achievements are a testament to his belief that good governance, rooted in justice, equity, and compassion, is key to overcoming the challenges posed by terrorism and underdevelopment. Despite the economic and political hurdles, he has redefined leadership in a state that was once on the brink of collapse, proving that with the right vision and determination, progress is not only possible but inevitable.

As Borno State continues to recover from the shadows of insurgency, Governor Zulum stands as a shining example of what leadership can achieve. His commitment to education, peace, and development has laid the groundwork for a brighter, more prosperous future for generations to come, even in the face of daunting challenges.
