The Federal Fire Service (FFS), Gombe State Command, has taken its fire safety awareness campaign to the streets of Gombe metropolis, urging residents to embrace preventive measures against fire outbreaks, particularly during the high-risk Ember Months and Harmattan season.
The awareness campaign, held on Friday, November 6, 2026, featured a mega rally across major streets and strategic locations in the state capital as part of activities marking the 2026 National Fire Safety Week.
Organised under the theme, “Building a Resilient Nigeria: One Community at a Time,” the exercise was designed to take fire safety education directly to the people and strengthen public participation in preventing avoidable fire disasters.
The rally featured a colourful motorcade through major streets of Gombe, public announcements and the distribution of fire safety awareness materials to residents and other members of the public.
Officers and men of the Command used the opportunity to educate traders, motorists, commuters, residents and other road users on common causes of fire outbreaks and practical steps to prevent them.
Particular attention was given to the safe handling of electrical appliances, proper use of cooking gas, responsible storage of combustible materials and appropriate responses during fire emergencies.
The campaign also drew attention to the increased risk of fire incidents during the Ember Months and Harmattan season, when dry weather conditions can accelerate the spread of flames and turn minor incidents into devastating disasters.
Speaking on the exercise, the State Controller of the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, DCF Suleiman Mohammed Suleiman, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to strengthening fire safety consciousness through continuous community engagement and public education.
He emphasised that preventing fire disasters should not be left to firefighters alone, stressing that building a fire-resilient society requires collective responsibility, vigilance and cooperation from every member of the community.
According to him, public awareness remains a critical tool in reducing fire incidents, protecting lives and safeguarding homes, businesses and valuable property.
The Command maintained that many fire outbreaks could be prevented through simple safety precautions, responsible handling of flammable materials and prompt action whenever warning signs of fire emergencies are noticed.
It therefore called on residents to make fire safety a daily priority rather than waiting until disasters occur before taking preventive measures.
The Federal Fire Service further urged members of the public to remain alert, avoid unsafe electrical connections, handle cooking gas with caution and ensure that combustible materials are properly stored away from sources of heat and ignition.
Residents were also encouraged to promptly report fire incidents to enable firefighters to respond quickly and minimise damage.
The campaign underscores the Federal Fire Service’s determination to deepen grassroots awareness and build a culture of fire prevention across communities in Gombe State.
For emergency assistance, members of the public were advised to contact the Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, through 07031497455.
As the 2026 National Fire Safety Week continues, the message from the Gombe Command remains clear: preventing fire disasters begins with individual responsibility, community awareness and collective action.
