The Federal Government has confirmed that 32 people were aboard a military aircraft that crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed that the aircraft was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members when it crashed.
The aircraft, identified by registration number NGR 931, was reportedly travelling from Benin to Lagos when it lost radio contact at about 9:13 a.m.
The loss of communication triggered an immediate search operation, with security and emergency agencies mobilised to locate the aircraft.
The wreckage was eventually traced to the Igbokoda area, a difficult riverine terrain that has complicated access to the crash site.
Rescue agencies and security personnel have intensified operations as efforts continue to determine the condition and fate of those on board.
The crash has sent shockwaves through Igbokoda and neighbouring communities, with residents anxiously awaiting updates from the authorities.
As of the time of filing this report, official casualty figures had not been released, while rescue operations and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash remain ongoing.
Authorities are expected to provide further information as emergency teams gain access to the crash site and establish what led to the aircraft’s loss of contact.
