Renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has unleashed a scathing critique on the Minister of Power, accusing him of dancing to the tunes of international financial giants, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
This fiery accusation comes in the wake of a recent hike in electricity tariffs, sparking nationwide debate and outcry.
In a bold statement, Falana declared, “The Honourable Minister of Power is acting the script of the IMF and the World Bank.”
He didn’t mince words in pointing out that these agencies have long advocated for the removal of subsidies across various sectors, pushing for commercialization and pricing policies that strain the pockets of ordinary Nigerians.”
The government cannot afford to protect the interest of Nigerians while implementing neoliberal policies dictated by the Bretton Wood institutions,” Falana emphasized, shedding light on the clash between economic ideologies and the welfare of the citizenry.
Not stopping there, Falana turned his scrutiny towards Western nations, singling out the United States for what he termed “double standards.”
He criticized their practice of providing subsidies for agriculture, energy, and fuel, along with extending grants and loans to students in need.
In contrast, these same countries advise against similar measures in Nigeria, exacerbating the burden on the populace.
Falana’s outspoken stance underscores the ongoing struggle between economic pragmatism and social equity, challenging policymakers to prioritize the well-being of Nigerians above external pressures and financial doctrines.
