A tragic road accident in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State has claimed the lives of a man and his son, who were burnt beyond recognition after a commercial tricycle burst into flames.
Three other persons, including the man’s wife and two children, sustained injuries in the crash, which occurred around 4:20 p.m. on Sunday at Sabon Barki area.
The family was reportedly returning from church when their tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, was allegedly hit by a commercial bus, triggering a fire that trapped the man and his son.
Despite efforts by people at the scene to rescue the victims, the intensity of the flames reportedly made it impossible to save the two occupants, who died before they could be pulled out.
Among the survivors was the man’s wife, who reportedly suffered a broken leg. The couple’s two other children and the tricycle rider also sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital for medical attention.
A witness identified as Gyang said he arrived at the scene shortly after the accident while returning from work and found people crying and struggling to rescue the victims.
“I was passing by on my way from work when I saw people crying. I went closer to find out what had happened and saw people trying to rescue the victims,” he said.
Gyang explained that the fire was too intense for bystanders to contain, leaving them unable to rescue those trapped inside the burning tricycle.
He, however, clarified that he did not witness the collision itself but arrived after the crash had occurred.
The witness further alleged that the driver of the commercial bus involved in the incident fled the scene.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
The exact circumstances surrounding the crash remain unclear, while the allegation that the commercial bus driver fled the scene could not be independently verified.
