#EndBadGovernanceInNigeria: Falana Slams Tinubu’s Speech for Ignoring Protesters’ Demands

Katsina state government

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent speech, stating it failed to address the key demands of #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters.

During a nationwide broadcast on Sunday, President Tinubu spoke amid ongoing protests that began on August 1.

Protesters are calling for fuel subsidies, improved living standards, cuts in government spending, lower electricity tariffs, and solutions to rising insecurity.

Falana emphasized that addressing corruption in the oil sector could negate the need for fuel subsidies.

He also urged the government to respond positively to the protesters’ demands, warning that ignoring them could lead to continued unrest.

Congratulating the protesters for highlighting the plight of millions of Nigerians, Falana demanded the immediate release of detained protesters and condemned the violent repression they faced.

He called for commissions of inquiry to investigate the killings of peaceful protesters and ensure justice for their families.

“Participation in peaceful protests should never be criminalized in Nigeria,” Falana asserted.
