The Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi Mika’ilu Sami Gomo III, has dissolved the National Executive Committee of the Zuru Emirate Development Society (ZEDS) with immediate effect.
The dissolution was announced after a meeting of the ZEDS Board of Trustees, chaired by the Emir at his palace in Zuru Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
In a statement signed by the Sadaukin Zuru, Abdullahi Idris, the Emirate Council said the decision followed what it described as the leadership’s ineffectiveness and lukewarm attitude towards peace, unity, development and security across the emirate.
The council said it was particularly concerned that the dissolved executives had not recorded what it considered meaningful contributions to education, economic development and infrastructure since assuming office in 2022.
According to the statement, the council also expressed concern that the leadership had become increasingly detached from communities and stakeholders across the emirate.
It alleged that some members had relocated their activities to cities including Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos and Kano, while engaging in criticism rather than maintaining regular contact with the people and contributing to efforts to address challenges confronting the emirate.
The Emirate Council further faulted the dissolved executives for failing to maintain regular consultations with community leaders and other stakeholders, particularly at a time when the emirate is confronted with infrastructure deficits and security concerns.
The council said the leadership of ZEDS was expected to work closely with traditional institutions, government and other stakeholders to complement ongoing efforts aimed at improving the lives of residents.
Following the dissolution, Alhaji Yusuf Wade was appointed the new National President of ZEDS and tasked with repositioning the organisation for greater impact.
The new leadership is expected to focus on infrastructure development, the introduction of monthly levies among Zuru indigenes across the country and stronger engagement with mining companies on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Wade, according to the statement, is an experienced education administrator who retired as a director in the Kebbi State Ministry of Education.
He also previously served as secretary of a committee comprising 16 professors and chaired by former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, on educational improvement.
The Emirate Council expressed confidence that the new leadership would strengthen ZEDS and make it more responsive to the developmental needs of communities across the Zuru Emirate.
The meeting was attended by prominent sons and traditional stakeholders of the emirate, including Major-General (Senator) Muhammad Magoro, Galadiman Zuru; Lieutenant-General Ishaya Bamaiyi, Uban Yakin Zuru; Justice Danlami Zama Senchi, Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal; members of the Emirate Council; representatives of the five chiefdoms; local government chairmen and district heads.
The council said the restructuring was aimed at refocusing ZEDS on its core responsibility of mobilising the emirate’s human and financial resources towards peace, development, security and improved welfare of its people.
