Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Disu, has raised concerns over the growing practice of Nigerians recording police officers while they are carrying out their official duties.
Disu urged members of the public to exercise restraint, stressing that police personnel deployed to highways, forests and other high-risk locations are putting their lives on the line to protect citizens.
Speaking against the backdrop of increasing social media recordings involving police officers, the IGP questioned the growing culture of turning encounters with security personnel into online content.
“Can we come to your office and record you? Can you record in the courtroom?” Disu asked, challenging Nigerians to consider whether such conduct would be acceptable in other professional settings.
He appealed to citizens to distinguish between legitimate documentation of misconduct and the indiscriminate recording of officers simply for social media attention.
According to him, officers operating in dangerous environments deserve recognition and cooperation rather than being treated as material for online entertainment.
The police chief also emphasised the importance of mutual respect between law enforcement personnel and members of the public, particularly at a time when officers are confronting serious security threats across the country.
“Don’t turn our police officers into content,” Disu cautioned, urging Nigerians to allow officers to perform their duties without unnecessary distractions.
His comments have reignited the debate over citizens’ rights to document police activities, the responsibilities of law enforcement officers and the growing influence of social media on public encounters with security agencies.
