Police Deploy Technology-Driven Strategy to Prevent Crimes Before They Occur
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of the North-West Zone, Sulaiman Muhammed Abdul, has launched the Nigeria Police Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) in Kebbi State, marking a significant step in the fight against banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes across the region.
Speaking during the inauguration on Tuesday, the DIG said the establishment of the specialised unit was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police and reflects the Force’s commitment to reducing crime and strengthening public safety nationwide.
According to him, the newly introduced VCRU represents a shift from the traditional reactive approach to policing by embracing technology-driven intelligence gathering and crime prevention strategies.
“The unit is designed to identify, track and prevent criminal activities before they are carried out. The Police will no longer wait for crimes to happen before taking action,” the DIG stated.
He explained that the VCRU is equipped with modern technological tools that enable officers to collect and analyze intelligence on planned criminal activities, thereby enhancing proactive policing and rapid intervention capabilities.
DIG Abdul stressed that the initiative aligns with the broader reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police aimed at modernising law enforcement operations and improving security outcomes across the country.
While addressing officers and men of the Kebbi State Police Command, the DIG urged them to uphold professionalism, discipline and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.
He warned against acts capable of tarnishing the image of the Force, emphasizing that effective policing must be carried out within the confines of the law.
“The public expects a professional Police Force that protects lives and property while respecting the rights and dignity of citizens. Officers must remain committed to these principles,” he said.
The DIG also disclosed that police welfare remains a top priority for the Inspector-General, noting that efforts are ongoing to improve healthcare services, housing facilities and general working conditions for personnel.
He expressed confidence that the adoption of advanced technology would significantly accelerate the fight against insecurity and improve operational efficiency across the country.
Earlier, the Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, CP Umar Hadejia, highlighted the achievements recorded by the Command in tackling insecurity, particularly against armed bandits and terrorist groups operating within and around the state.
He said sustained security operations had led to successful confrontations with notorious criminal elements, including members of the Lakurawa and Mamudawa groups, resulting in the neutralisation and arrest of several suspects.
According to the Commissioner, Kebbi’s strategic location and its borders with two neighbouring countries present unique security challenges that often facilitate the movement of criminal elements across international boundaries.
Despite these challenges, he noted that the combined efforts of the Police and other security agencies have significantly weakened the operational capacity of bandits and terrorist groups in the state.
“Kebbi faces complex security threats due to its border status, but our officers, working closely with sister security agencies, have continued to push back criminal elements and deny them safe havens,” Hadejia said.
He added that the activation of the Violent Crime Response Unit would further strengthen ongoing operations and improve the Command’s ability to detect, prevent and respond to security threats.
“With the establishment of this unit, our fight against violent crimes has been reinforced. We will ensure that the VCRU remains active and effective in supporting crime prevention efforts not only in Kebbi but across the wider North-West region,” the Commissioner assured.
Security stakeholders at the event described the launch of the unit as a timely intervention, especially as authorities intensify efforts to combat banditry, terrorism, kidnapping and other emerging security threats across the country.
The inauguration is expected to enhance intelligence-led policing and strengthen the Nigeria Police Force’s capacity to proactively confront criminal networks before they strike.
