The School for the Deaf, Malumfashi, has stormed to victory in the maiden edition of the Governor Dikko Umaru Radda Para-Games School Competition, delivering a commanding performance that set the tone for inclusive sports in Katsina State.
The Malumfashi-based institution clinched an impressive haul of seven gold, seven silver, and four bronze medals to emerge overall champions, outshining stiff competition from sister institutions.
Trailing behind, Katsina School for the Blind and Deaf secured second place with six gold, eight silver, and nine bronze medals, while Community School for the Blind, Daura, settled for third position with three gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.
Winners were rewarded with trophies and medals, as the groundbreaking event drew praise from stakeholders for promoting inclusivity and talent discovery among persons with special needs.
The Special Adviser to the President on People with Special Needs, Muhammad Isah Abba, hailed the Katsina State Government for pioneering what he described as the first competition of its kind across Northern Nigeria’s 19 states.
He noted that the initiative reflects a growing national commitment to inclusion, especially following Katsina’s recent success at the National Para Games in Abuja.
Representing Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, the State Commissioner for Sports, Surajo Yazid Abukur, applauded participants for their resilience and sportsmanship, reiterating the administration’s directive on total inclusivity in sports development.
Earlier, competition consultant Zaharaddeen Nasarawa revealed that the event is a pilot scheme aimed at nurturing talents for national and continental competitions, including the All-African Games.
The two-day tournament featured para soccer, athletics, shot put, and football events tailored for the blind and deaf—marking a bold step toward empowering athletes with special needs in the state.
