An Upper Shari’a Court 3 sitting in Takalau, Birnin Kebbi, has remanded a man, Salim Abubakar, popularly known as “Shekare,” after he pleaded guilty to charges bordering on forgery, defamation and conduct capable of causing a breach of public peace.
Abubakar, an indigene of the Illela area of Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, was arraigned before the court presided over by Justice Samaila Alhaji-Noma.
The case stemmed from a petition reportedly filed by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr Abba Sani-Kalgo, who asked the police to investigate the alleged activities of the defendant.
During proceedings, the prosecution alleged that Abubakar created and shared a political graphic on Facebook using the commissioner’s name and photograph alongside the logo of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to the prosecution, the material was initially posted on the defendant’s personal Facebook account before being circulated further on other social media platforms.
The prosecution said the alleged offences violated Sections 373, 374, 348 and 79(1) of the Kebbi State Penal Code Law, 2021.
When the charges were read in open court, Abubakar pleaded guilty to all the counts.
Following his plea, the court convicted him on the charges.
However, the court adjourned the matter to September 18, 2026, to enable the prosecution to make adequate preparations and for the court to deliver its considered judgment.
Justice Alhaji-Noma subsequently ordered that Abubakar be remanded in a correctional facility pending the next hearing date.
The case has drawn attention amid growing concerns over the use of social media to circulate political materials and allegations involving public officials.
