In a significant legal development, the Federal High Court in Kano has issued an interim order halting the reinstatement of former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. The court’s decision comes amid ongoing disputes over the recent repeal of the Kano Emirate Council law.Justice A.M. Liman granted the order in response to a suit filed by Alhaji Aminu Bappa Dan Agundi, known as Sarkin Dawaki Babba. The court has temporarily suspended the implementation of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Law, 2024, which had initially paved the way for Sanusi’s return. The court order restrains the Kano State Government and related authorities from enforcing the repeal law, maintaining the status quo until the fundamental rights case is fully heard. The hearing is set for June 3, 2024.This legal tussle follows the Kano State House of Assembly’s repeal of the 2019 law, which created four additional emirate councils. Governor Abba Yusuf had signed the amended bill, dethroning Emir Aminu Ado Bayero and reinstating Sanusi, a move now stalled by the court’s intervention.
