Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has sworn in two commissioners, a Permanent Secretary and 17 newly elected local government chairmen, charging them to prioritise service delivery, protect the state’s peace and remain committed to their responsibilities.
The swearing-in ceremony, held on Wednesday at the Government House in Damaturu, brought together top government officials, traditional rulers, security chiefs, family members and other dignitaries.
Governor Buni appointed Dr. Abubakar Bukar Kagu as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, while Dauda Alhaji Idi was sworn in as Commissioner for Livestock Development.
Barrister Fatima Ibrahim Makintami was also inaugurated as Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Justice.
The governor said the appointments were based on merit, experience and commitment to public service, urging the appointees to justify the confidence placed in them by delivering on their respective mandates.
He called on the 17 local government chairmen to strengthen grassroots governance and ensure that the needs of residents remained central to their administration.
Buni highlighted Yobe’s reported performance in democratic governance, citing an assessment by the Kimpact Development Initiative that placed the state second in democratic performance, with a score of approximately 64.3 per cent.
He said his administration had consistently conducted local government elections to promote grassroots participation and give residents a sense of belonging in the democratic process.
“Our administration has remained consistent in conducting local government council elections to give the people at the grassroots a sense of belonging,” the governor stated.
On the administration’s achievements, Buni highlighted developments in the health sector, particularly complex surgical procedures performed at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital and Damaturu Specialist Hospital.
He also pointed to the reported attainment of full accreditation for postgraduate residency training by the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, describing the development as an important milestone for medical training in the state.
Turning to politics, the governor urged the newly elected chairmen to work towards the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections.
He specifically called for support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid and the governorship ambition of Baba Malam Wali.
“It is a task that must be achieved because Yobe State is the home of the All Progressives Congress,” Buni declared.
The governor further appealed to political stakeholders across party lines to conduct their activities within the provisions of the law and established electoral guidelines.
Reflecting on Yobe’s past security challenges, he cautioned political actors against actions capable of undermining the peace and stability the state has worked to maintain.
The ceremony marked the formal inauguration of the new appointees and local government chairmen, with expectations that they would translate their mandates into improved governance and service delivery across the state.
