The Borno State Government high-powered delegation to Lassa in Askira Uba Local Government Area continued its engagement on Wednesday with visits to victims, affected families, and community leaders to assess the situation and offer government support.
The delegation, led by the Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, was dispatched by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum as part of the state’s ongoing response to the attack on Government Day Secondary School, Lassa.
The team first visited the Federal Medical Center, Mubi, where they met with Malam Goni Shettima, a teacher at the Secondary School, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head during the attack.
Receiving the delegation, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Shuaibu Jauro Yahya, confirmed that the teacher’s condition was stable but noted that he would require advanced medical attention.
Speaking during the visit, Wakilbe conveyed Governor Zulum’s sympathy to the injured teacher and his family, assuring them of the government’s continued support.
“His Excellency, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, deeply sympathizes with you and your family over this unfortunate incident. Wakilbe said.
The delegation later proceeded to Uba, where it met with parents of the abducted students in the presence of the Emir of Uba, Alhaji Aliyu Ibn Samaila Mamza, at his palace.
Addressing the gathering, Wakilbe assured the grieving families that the state government was working closely with security agencies to secure the safe release of the missing students.
“We understand the pain and anguish the families are going through. I want to assure you that the government has not relented. We are working closely with security agencies and all relevant stakeholders to ensure the safe rescue and reunification of the abducted students with their families,” he stated.
Speaking on behalf of the parents, Mr. Emmanuel Ayuba and Rev. Simon Wayindu appealed to the government to intensify efforts towards the speedy rescue of their children, describing the emotional trauma and uncertainty families have endured since the attack.
The delegation also visited Mussa Community, where students were abducted during a separate attack on a school on May 15, 2026. The team reassured affected parents that the government’s efforts to secure the children’s release remained unwavering.
Responding on behalf of the affected families in Mussa, Mr. Ishaku Jidayi appealed to the government to accelerate rescue operations and reunite the abducted children with their loved ones.
The delegation included the Commissioner for Intergovernmental Affairs, Hon. Samaila Satumari; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Dr. Julian Bitrus; Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Projects, Engr. Emmanuel Yerima;
Others include the Treasurer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Suleiman Bello Maina; the Education Secretary of Askira/Uba Local Government Area, Fatsuma Adamu; the Chairman of Askira/Uba Local Government Area, Hon. Mada Saidu; and other senior government officials.
The Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) equally accompanied the delegation throughout the visit.
