Boat Mishap in Benue Claims Seven Lives, Two Still Missing

Borno State Government

Tragedy struck in Benue State on Saturday evening as seven persons lost their lives while two others remain missing after a boat conveying mourners capsized on the River Benue in Makurdi Local Government Area.

The ill-fated boat was reportedly carrying passengers who were returning from a burial ceremony when it overturned mid-journey, throwing occupants into the river.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson of the Benue State Police Command, Udeme Edet, said emergency responders were immediately alerted following the mishap.

He disclosed that seven bodies had been recovered from the river, while search and rescue operations were ongoing for two persons still unaccounted for as of the time of filing this report.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as sudden and devastating, saying efforts by nearby boat operators and local divers to rescue victims were hampered by strong currents and poor visibility.

The tragedy has thrown the affected communities into mourning, with families of the victims gathering at the riverbank as search operations continue.

Authorities have urged residents who depend on water transportation to exercise caution and adhere strictly to safety measures, especially during high-risk river conditions.

The River Benue, one of Nigeria’s major waterways, has witnessed several boat accidents in recent years, often attributed to overloading, poor safety practices, and strong river currents.

As rescue efforts continue, the police say further updates will be provided once the full circumstances surrounding the incident are established.
