KIU Teaching Hospital: A landmark achievement in healthcare and a new chapter in Borno’s recovery.
Rebuilding a state devastated by years of insurgency requires more than promises. It requires vision, determination and investments that improve people’s lives. Under Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Borno State continues to pursue recovery through critical infrastructure, education and healthcare development.q
One of the most remarkable achievements in this journey is the Kashim Ibrahim University Teaching Hospital (KIUTH), Maiduguri, a modern, 400-bed healthcare facility commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima on 23 October 2026.
The journey began in 2020 when the Borno State Government initiated plans to establish a teaching hospital and a College of Medical Sciences to address shortages of healthcare professionals and improve access to specialised medical services. Construction commenced on 19 November 2020, marking the beginning of a project designed to transform healthcare delivery in the state.
Today, the hospital boasts modern diagnostic equipment, including an MRI scanner, a 160-slice CT scanner, 4D ultrasound machines and digital mammography. It also features specialist departments, a medical college complex, a students’ hostel, a 200-unit staff estate and an oxygen plant.
This is more than a hospital; it is an investment in human lives, medical education and the future of Borno State.
The facility is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel outside Borno for specialised treatment while providing opportunities to train doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals for the state and the wider North-East.
The commissioning also coincided with the inauguration of the Yerwa Practice Mega Primary School and another mega primary school delivered under the Kashim Shettima Free Education Programme, highlighting the importance of healthcare and education in rebuilding society.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasised that leaders are ultimately remembered for the institutions they establish, the lives they improve and the lasting contributions they make to society.
His message reflects the significance of Governor Zulum’s investment in institutions designed to serve generations beyond his administration.
A NEW BORNO IS RISING
Borno’s recovery journey is ongoing, but projects such as KIUTH demonstrate the importance of building strong institutions that can improve people’s lives for years to come.
For patients, the hospital offers hope for better access to specialised healthcare. For students, it creates opportunities for medical training. For the state, it represents progress towards a stronger healthcare system.
Beyond the ruins of the past, Governor Zulum is working towards a Borno defined by renewed hope, stronger institutions and sustainable development.
Ultimately, the true measure of this achievement will be the lives saved, the professionals trained and the quality of healthcare delivered to the people.
Because the greatest legacy of leadership is not merely what is built today, but what continues to serve humanity for generations to come
