The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has moved to strengthen security around the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), calling for closer cooperation between the police and the academic community.
Azare made the call on Monday, August 31, 2026, when he paid a courtesy visit to the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Ekong, as part of his ongoing engagement with key stakeholders across the state.
The meeting focused on improving collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the university, particularly in the areas of intelligence sharing, crime prevention, rapid response and the protection of students and staff.
The Commissioner said universities occupy a critical position in society, describing them as important centres for human-capital development and socio-economic progress.
He assured the university management that the Police Command would continue to prioritise the safety of lives and property within and around the institution.
According to him, maintaining security on campus requires more than routine policing, stressing that proactive measures, timely intelligence and effective communication are essential to preventing emerging threats.
Azare urged the university authorities, students, lecturers, non-academic staff and other members of the campus community to maintain close communication with security agencies and promptly report suspicious activities.
He also assured the institution of the Command’s readiness to provide necessary security support for academic programmes and other legitimate activities within the university.
The Commissioner appealed to students and other members of the university community to remain law-abiding and vigilant, noting that security is a shared responsibility.
Responding, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christopher Ekong, welcomed the Commissioner and commended the police for their efforts toward maintaining peace and security across Akwa Ibom.
Ekong stressed that a stable and secure environment remains vital to effective teaching, learning, research and the overall development of the university.
He pledged the university management’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with the Police and other security agencies, particularly through improved information sharing, crime prevention initiatives and measures aimed at enhancing student safety.
The meeting, according to the Command, underscored the common resolve of the two institutions to create a safer academic environment where students, lecturers, researchers and other staff can carry out their responsibilities without fear.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to professional, people-oriented and intelligence-driven policing, while pledging to sustain partnerships with educational institutions, traditional leaders, community stakeholders, civil society organisations and other relevant groups in its efforts to keep the state safe.
