Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the alleged unauthorised release of voter registration details belonging to Nollywood actor Emeka Ike, following concerns over the exposure of sensitive electoral data on social media.
Atiku’s demand comes amid growing public debate after Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, shared screenshots on X (formerly Twitter) purportedly showing details of Emeka Ike’s voter registration transfer from Imo State to Abuja.
The post, which quickly went viral, allegedly contained information believed to have originated from a restricted administrative portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), raising questions about data protection and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral systems.
Olayinka, in his post, had questioned the eligibility of the Nollywood actor to contest for a House of Representatives seat in Abuja, referencing his recent political activities and voter registration transfer process.
However, the disclosure of what appears to be private voter data has triggered widespread concerns among political stakeholders, civil society organisations, and privacy advocates, who warn that the incident could undermine public trust in the electoral process.
Reacting to the development, Atiku Abubakar described the situation as “deeply troubling,” insisting that any breach of voter data security must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible held accountable.
He stressed that the integrity of the electoral process depends not only on credible elections but also on the protection of citizens’ personal and biometric information.
