The Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) has clarified that assets earlier proposed for disposal had reached the end of their useful life and were no longer suitable for operational use.
The authority, which reacted to recent media reports on the proposed disposal of some of its assets, said the items involved were unserviceable, obsolete and beyond economic repair.
In a statement issued in Maiduguri on Saturday, the management of the authority said the assets had undergone technical inspection by the Federal Ministry of Works, which certified them as uneconomical to repair.
According to the statement, the authority thereafter initiated the necessary administrative procedures for the disposal in line with extant regulations and due process requirements guiding the management of public assets.
The CBDA, however, said the proposed exercise had been suspended following consultations with key stakeholders and in view of existing restrictions on the movement and disposal of scrap materials in Borno State for security reasons.
“After consultations with key stakeholders and in recognition of existing restrictions on the movement and disposal of scrap materials within Borno State for security reasons, the Authority took the responsible decision to suspend the proposed exercise pending further guidance from the appropriate authorities and the conclusion of all necessary consultations,” the statement said.
It added that no scrap materials had been authorised or released for evacuation or disposal.
“Consequently, no scrap materials have been authorised or released for evacuation or disposal by the Authority,” it stated.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to the protection and optimal utilisation of public assets in support of its mandate in irrigation development, water resources management, agricultural productivity and regional economic growth.
It also called on security agencies to remain vigilant against any unauthorised movement or disposal of materials purported to belong to the authority, while reiterating its commitment to transparency, accountability and sustained engagement with relevant stakeholders.
