GUSAU — In a strong demonstration of its commitment to troop welfare, the Nigerian Army has unveiled a newly built 10-unit housing estate for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) at the Headquarters of 1 Brigade, Gusau, with top military commanders declaring that better living conditions are key to a more effective fighting force.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Major General BP Koughna, commissioned the project on Tuesday, describing it as another milestone in implementing the Chief of Army Staff’s “Soldiers First” Command Philosophy, which prioritises the welfare of personnel as the foundation of operational success.
Maj. Gen. Koughna commended the Commander of 1 Brigade, Brigadier General M. Jimoh, for initiating and completing the housing project, saying the investment reflects the Nigerian Army’s resolve to improve the quality of life of its personnel while boosting morale and combat readiness.
He stressed that decent accommodation remains one of the most important welfare packages for soldiers, noting that a motivated force is better equipped to confront security challenges across the country. He also urged beneficiaries to safeguard and maintain the new facility.
Earlier, Brig. Gen. Jimoh said the quarters were constructed in recognition of the critical leadership role played by Senior Non-Commissioned Officers, adding that the project aligns with the GOC’s vision of strengthening troop welfare and force protection in line with the Chief of Army Staff’s strategic direction.
According to him, the modern housing units will provide a more conducive environment for soldiers and their families, deepen their sense of belonging and inspire greater dedication to duty.
The colourful commissioning ceremony attracted senior military officers, including Maj. Gen. UG Ogeleka, Maj. Gen. SA Emmanuel and Brig. Gen. N. Mbaka, alongside principal staff officers, soldiers and invited guests.
Highlights of the event included the official commissioning of the quarters, presentation of keys to beneficiaries, exchange of commemorative plaques and group photographs.
The project adds to the Nigerian Army’s growing investment in personnel welfare, reinforcing the belief that caring for soldiers remains essential to sustaining operational effectiveness and national security.
