Grief and anger have spread across Abuja after a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, Abdulsamad Jamiu, lost his life during a late-night military operation in Dei-Dei.
The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday at Shagari Estate, where troops from the Guards Brigade reportedly responded to an emergency alert about a suspected robbery attack in the area.
According to an official military statement, soldiers encountered gunfire from fleeing suspects upon arrival, leading to a short but intense exchange of shots. During the confrontation, Jamiu was reportedly hit.
The army stated that efforts were made to save him, but he later died from his injuries. His remains have been taken to Kubwa General Hospital. Authorities also extended condolences to his family and colleagues, assuring the public that a full investigation is underway.
However, the military’s explanation has been challenged.
A source close to the family disputed the claim of a crossfire, alleging instead that the soldiers fired recklessly and that there were no armed robbers at the scene. The source described the official version as misleading, intensifying public concern over what truly happened.
Residents of the estate remain shaken, with many calling for an independent investigation as the differing accounts continue to raise questions.
With inquiries ongoing, pressure is building on authorities to establish the facts and ensure accountability, while reigniting broader concerns about civilian safety during security operations in the Federal Capital Territory.
